Tent sites, campsites, camping and campgrounds in Sydney and near Sydney

Camping and campsites in Sydney

Some of the caravan parks in Sydney have very good camping facilities and campsites as well as a great environment and setting. Some other caravan parks.... well, the less said the better. Sydney Hills Holiday Park at Dural, Lane Cove Caravan Park at Macquarie Park and Lakeside at Narrabeen are the pick of the caravan parks with everything you need if you're looking for a secure environment to pitch your tent. These caravan park have great amenity blocks (showers and toilets), reception areas or small shops for drinks and ice creams and somewhere to swim on those hot days. But the real benefit of camping in a good caravan park for most people is the secure environment. Caravan Parks are the only option if you want to camp close to Sydney itself.

Camping and campsites on the edge of Sydney

Campgrounds in Sydney that are not in caravan parks are located on the outskirts of Sydney. Places like The Basin, Bent's Basin (similar name but different location) and Bonnie Vale are all located within National Parks. The Basin is to the North in Ku-ring-ai National Park, Bent's Basin is near Mulgoa in the west of Sydney on the Nepean River and Bonnie Vale is to the South in the Royal National Park. These 3 places are all 50 to 60 kilometres distance from Sydney city (The Sydney metropolitan area is huge).

The Basin campground at Pittwater

Best way to get to The Basin is via ferry from Palm Beach. Walking in is a bit of a hike. There is no access for vehicles so you have to carry all your camping gear in with you. Right on the water. More details are available here.

Bent's Basin camping area Wallacia

is a nice spot and an easy drive from anywhere in Sydney. Right on the Nepean River with plenty of space to spread out and a popular swimming spot. Large tent sites available. More detailed information here.

Bonnie Vale at Bundeena

Interesting little spot close to the ocean and on Port Hacking. Accessible by road through The Royal National Park or ferry from Cronulla to Bundeena and then a 15 minute walk. More information here.

The 3 areas I have referred to above are quite different but all give you access to swimming, are in National Parks (Bent's Basin is virtually a National Park), have facilities to make your stay feel a little bit like home, and close to civilization while feeling like true wilderness.
